Welcome back to our blog. We appreciate your various comments and if you missed yesterday’s discussion kindly visit www.safetymomentswithfunmilola.blogspot.com  to know how to boost employee morale through pep talk.

Today we are looking at Toolbox Meeting- a must do at every worksite. This is a type of verbal commination as discussed last week. It is an informal safety meeting that focuses on safety topics related to the specific job at hand.  These meetings are normally short in duration and are generally conducted at the job site prior to the commencement of the day’s job or a work shift.

It can be referred to as tailgate meeting, safety briefing or a mini pep talk. Topics can range from proper lifting techniques, appropriate use of PPE, good housekeeping, proper handling of tools etc. it is normally conducted by the safety professional in charge of the worksite.
Major Components of a tool box meeting are as follows:
  • The topics discussed should be relevant to the type of project being handled because it should be used as on –the-job safety training and meeting to educate the workers.
  • It should be held before commencement of work or shift
  • It must be done at job site
  • Very short between 10 to 15 minutes
  • Discuss safety topics in relation to the tasks at hand
  • Workers participation through questions and contributions is paramount.
Benefits of Tool box meeting
  • Motivates workers to uphold safe work practices al at time
  • Promotes safety awareness and employee involvement in the safety program
  • Informs workers on hazards associated with the project or specific task at hand and possible ways to eliminate or control the hazard.
  • Helps to communicate new laws, standards and company policies and procedures to every employee.
  • Workers participation helps when reviewing or revising organization safety procedures and systems
  • It is very important that details of what was discussed during the meeting and attendance should be recorded and documented.
Tool box meeting or talk should be part of the daily tasks on every worksite.
