EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION- A GUIDE TO A POSITIVE HEALTH AND SAFETY PRACTICE

Welcome to this new week. And today we will be discussing Effective Communication –a guide to a positive health and safety practice.
Communication by Wikipedia is defined as an act of conveying information from one entity or group to another through the use of mutually understood signs, symbols or semiotic rules.
Effective communication is defined as the methods of relaying information that gets a point across. This type of information is also known as a two-way information sharing process. There are three basic things involved in an effective communication channel and they are; the COMMUNICATOR, the INFORMATION and the RECIPIENT. These three work together to form a complete cycle with the communicator taking the lead as the initiator of the information.

Many challenges and problems emanating from occupational health and safety is due to a break in the information cycle i.e. the principal –the communicator does not pass the information out correctly and or the information is not mutually understood by the recipient.
There are three basic methods of communication in Health and Safety and they are: VERBAL, WRITTEN AND GRAPHIC.
HSG65 defines that Organization with a positive safety culture is characterized by COMMUNICATION FOUNDED ON MUTUAL TRUST, SHARED PERCEPTIONS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY AND CONFIDENCE IN THE EFFICACY OF PREVENTIVE MEASURES.
