BEATING AIR POLLUTION - OUR COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY

The World Environment Day is 2019 themed Beat Air Pollution

Air Pollution is the introduction into the environment of a substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effect. There are two types: Primary and Secondary pollutants.

Primary pollutants that are emitted directly into the air and can cause harm. Examples include; particulates, sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen which can cause irritation of the lungs and other parts of the respiratory system

Secondary pollutants formed from the reaction of pollutants with other substances or the surroundings into which they are emitted. Examples are; low level Ozone (bad Ozone) is formed when sulphur dioxide emitted from the burning of fossil fuels reacts with the presence of sunlight, causing irritation of the respiratory system.

These pollutants can be in the form of gases, vapour, odours, mist, fumes, smoke, dust, grit, fibre and the most common airborne pollutant are carbon monoxide, benzene, 1,3-butadiene, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and lead etc

Common sources of these air pollutants are Agriculture, fossil fuel burning, mining, gas flaring, particulate dust, waste gases from stack, cement factories, stone crushing excavation activities and individual personal activities Etc
Air pollution makes people sick, it causes breathing problems,  promotes cancer, and it harms plants, animals, and the environment in which we live.

Our Responsibility to beat air pollution is Pollution Control.

Pollution control is a term used in environmental management. It means the control of emissions and effluents into air. Without pollution control, the waste will degrade the environment.

In the hierarchy of controls, pollution prevention and waste minimization are more desirable than pollution control.

Only man can minimize pollution by preventing its increase and spread. It is our duty to protect our environment from pollution. An individual can adopt the following  preventive measures to reduce pollution
·
  •      Learn about the major polluters in your area
  • ·       Tell people about what you know and educate them about aftermaths of pollution.
  • ·     Lesson regarding bad effects of pollution must be included in school education.
  • ·         Avoid unnecessary burning of the crop residues and the biomass.
  • ·         Avoid burning waste which in turn reduces smoke
  • ·         We all must participate in afforestation.
  • ·         Avoid smoking and unnecessary use of vehicles.
  • ·   Drive safely by Applying gentle pressure to gas and accelerating slowly,   Driving at or below the speed limit and Keeping your speed steady
  • ·         Get regular maintenance on your vehicle and generators
  • ·         Walk or ride your bike whenever possible
  • ·         Use public transportation
  • ·         Consolidate your trips

You and I are responsible in beating air pollution. Start to contribute your quota today.
