UNSAFE ACTS



WELCOME!!!!! To the beginning of a new working week. And today we would be discussing the topic UNSAFE ACTS.

“Advanced Learners Dictionary defines Unsafe acts as actions involving or causing danger or risks, liable to hurt or harm”.

A more comprehensive definition states that “Unsafe act is any act that deviates from a recognized and acceptable safe way or specified method of doing a job and which increases the probabilities for an accident.

Unsafe acts are always human initiated and it can originate from either employer or employee.

 Kindly note that all actions, behaviors, choices and decisions that we engage in at our workplace that is detrimental to our personal Health and safety  and sometimes liable to jeopardize the safety of others, equipment,  company properties and the environment as a whole are unsafe acts.

The ILO Convention 187 outlined the first specific responsibilities of employees to be “To take reasonable care for their own safety and that of other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work”. We should always be reminded that our acts - safe or unsafe has the possibility of affecting us and other coworkers.

Examples of unsafe acts are horseplay, Lack of PPE usage, Improper use of PPE, Boycott standard equipment operating procedures, Failure to tag out lock out, Use of defective tools ,Failure to display appropriate warning signs , Failure to collect appropriate PTW before commencement of work, Removal of safety guards on equipment etc.
